This white paper proposes expanding the definition of occupant "comfort" to include safety, and outlines the benefits of integrating safety and security functions (access control, CCTV, fire alarm, smoke control, intrusion) with HVAC and environmental monitoring into an overall building management system.

The paper also addresses the strengths and limitations of the current BACnet standard, and compares BACnet to LonMark and other open protocols being used in the automation industry today. The role of "multi-lingual" control systems is also discussed as a technique to achieve full system interoperability.
